This painting was completed as part of an artist challenge where we were given 3 photos and were told to incorporate at least two of them into a finished painting. I decided to incorporate all three and they were - obviously the car!, the 'love' sign and some lego blocks (which can just be seen on the poster in my painting). Perhaps you were on the road in the sixties, when love and flower power were in the air - if so, I hope this painting will take you back there for a while and revive some happy memories ............... Once this painting is sold I will make a donation of 10% to Save the Dalmatians. I chose this charity on this occasion as I had originally planned to paint a Dalmatian with the features from two of the photos, but thought that for once it might be nice to paint something without a dog in it - not for long though!

This painting was inspired by a monthly artist challenge, the theme of which for July was 'Illusion'. I must admit that I very nearly didn't prepare a painting this month, partly because I have been busy with commissions but also, I am ashamed to admit, because I simply couldn't think of an 'illusion' subject! However, I am pleased to say that my brain finally (after a lot of bullying) produced an idea for a painting which I am showing today. As I hope is obvious, the Dalmatian is walking through shallow water in which the evening sky is reflected and my aim was to make the Dalmatian appear to be walking in the clouds - almost - but with the ripples on the water to tie it to reality and also maybe create some confusion in the viewer. After some tweaking (I really need someone on hand to stop me continually messing with finished paintings!) I am quite pleased with my 'illusion' painting and I hope you like it too :)

This secluded spot in Gleann Duibh was discovered during a long walk in Acharn forrest in the hills to the south of Killin. The river winds and tumbles over the rocks in its downwards rush and, just after this spot, passes under an old viaduct which used to carry the railway to Killin Station. The old railway route is now used as a cycle track.

This view was captured during a cycle run while on holiday at Onich on Loch Linnhe. We had crossed to Ardgour on the Corran Ferry and followed the coast road southwards. The road bridged the river Gour just before it joined Loch Linnhe with this lovely view opening up towards the head of the glen.

Original oil painting on canvas. A beach late at night, painted almost entirely from memory and just a bare outline sketch. A cloudy moon and empty stretch of silvery-buff coloured sand created a dark moody feeling; impossible to paint at night, so I relied on memory recall plus a bit of heightened sensitivity to try and recreate the atmosphere.

In this picture, I have used the tree to focus on light, pattern and colour. The middle ground is a hazy patch of meadow-flowers and the original rooftops at the bottom of the picture are replaced by shadowy organic forms; lifting the eye back up to the tree.

Original acrylic painting on box canvas; all canvas edges are painted, hence no framing required. White calla lilies set against a soft background of deep blues, greens, mauves and paler yellow-greens with touches of muted orange. The ripple-edged leaves are painted with with glazes of red-purple, magenta and opaque greens; with deeper purples in the shadowed areas. Thicker paint is used for the white flowers, to force a contrast between light and dark. Detail is fairly minimal except for the central spathes of the lilies which are dotted with yellow, orange and green acrylic paint.

This is the view across the river from the Onich caravan site situated near the Corran Ferry north of Onich, on the eastern bank of Loch Linnhe in the Scottish Highlands. The hills in the background are actually on the opposite bank of the loch. I have visited this campsite often and photographed this particular view many times. I was particularly taken, on this occasion, by the sunlight on the hills behind the cottage.

I was fascinated by the colours and shapes of all the rooftops and felt that a painting would have an almost abstract quality. This is a view of Lower Largo harbour at low tide. The small harbour, now virtually empty, was once home to 36 herring boats, employing around 80 people but is nowadays mainly used as a berth for leisure craft. Lower Largo is the birthplace of Alexander Selkirk who wrote the famous novel Robinson Crusoe. A statue at 101 Main Street marks the thatched cottage where he was born. The son of a shoemaker, he left for a life at sea. After a quarrel with the captain of the ship he was put ashore for four lonely years on the deserted island of Juan Fernandez.

Another revisit to a previous painting as I simply couldn't resist the idea of using this painting with a Dalmatian instead of Alaskan Malamute as previously featured. It is one of my favourite paintings and seemed to call out to be painted so near to St Valentine's Day. I hope you all enjoy seeing it as much as I enjoyed painting it. I don't understand how one can look into the eyes of a dog such as this and not reach out to help it - here is this dog's story. Rex was on the euthanasia list at the Metro Louisville Animal Shelter, just because he's mainly black and not the kind of dog who gets adopted quickly. A woman called Eileen, who has rescued many dogs, became attached to him, and when he started getting very stressed in the shelter environment and it looked like he was in danger of euthanasia again, she championed him. That decision led to a confrontation with the animal care manager that resulted in Eileen adopting Rex herself and then finding him a wonderful home in Connecticut and making the 14 hour drive with him to take him to his new home. Rex is doing great in his new home, where he lives with a work-at-home dad, mum who works and goes to school, a boy in first grade, and another dog, a Corgi named Baron. He's living the good life now - all thanks to one woman's determination. A 10% donation will be made to Noah's Bark pet rescue once this painting is sold
