Description: This is a view of Lower Largo harbour at low tide. The small harbour, now virtually empty, was once home to 36 herring boats, employing around 80 people but is nowadays mainly used as a berth for leisure craft.
Lower Largo is the birthplace of Alexander Selkirk who wrote the famous novel Robinson Crusoe. A statue at 101 Main Street marks the thatched cottage where he was born. The son of a shoemaker, he left for a life at sea. After a quarrel with the captain of the ship he was put ashore for four lonely years on the deserted island of Juan Fernandez.
